Humbly Yours

"An Autumn View" - 8 x 10" - oil

For the most part I'm a pessimist.  It's unfortunate but it helps me deal with this roller coaster ride that I call "the art life."  All in all I'm just trying to break even but every once in a while something good happens.  Today for instance, I attended the Worthington Area Art League / Ohio Plein Air holiday potluck dinner.  It was here that I was presented with a first place ribbon for the painting above.  This painting is currently part of an exhibition titled "Leaving Footprints" at the Arts Castle in Delaware, OH.  We were fortunate enough to have Don Jones, "the father of art therapy" juror the show.  You can read more about Mr. Jones in this interview (click here).

This award was an important step for me because I'm still very new to the local art scene here in Ohio.  While I can enjoy this award today, tomorrow my focus will shift back to trying to make the next painting better than the last.

It's hard to imagine you as a pessimist; everything about your posts and your artwork is upbeat and life-affirming. Congrats on the award! Great to see you rewarded for your dedication.

Hard to believe but true. I don't post anything when I'm in a bad mood because I fear that I'll scare people off and that's part of the reason that I don't post as often as I should. Thanks Garriot for the kudos.

Congratulations, Steven. Being affirmed for our works as artists is an innate desire to most of us I think. Best wishes for much success in 2011 as well.

Absolutly wonderful, you are just a fantastic artist. What do you think of the art done on the computers??
I am in a lot of art shows and all the computer works sells it's so perfect and life like. I quess that's what is selling, I lose heart,I am not anywhere as good as your work. It is mine though from a blank canvas and my heart and brushes.

Hi Yvonne, As long as your heart is in it keeping creating. As for computer art I have no problem with it because I create posters and graphics in my limited spare time. I don't know if it's so much about what's selling right now but computer generated art can be developed so quickly and cleaner with little cost. This usually means that the artists doesn't have to charge much to get their investment. At the end of the day people and serious art lovers appreciate and value unique hand made pieces more so than computer generated.
