"Deere John" - 11" x 14" - oil

I painted this piece, along with some other paintings, a few weeks ago with the hope that it would be selected by the Art at the Mill show and sale. Did it make the cut? Yes and no. I'd like to tell you more but I don't completely understand the situation myself.

What should an artist talk about on a blog? This question came up from a friend a few days ago. I told him that people want to know about the insights of an artist's life. Now I'm starting to question that. People almost never ask me insightful questions about my life as an artist other than what I'm currently working on. Is it all about the artwork? How much insight is too much info?

Hi Steven,

First, I like this painting because it makes me feel nostalgic about growing up in northern Illinois. So I think it is very cool. If you didn't make the cut or a sale, I would be puzzled.

Your questions about what should an artist post on their blog...well, I enjoy information from painters, or any artist for that matter, about what inspires them. What was the impetus for any given painting? Is there a deep meaning behind it? Is it just something you saw and wanted to paint/create? Did you get started and change your mind and direction? I like to know about an individual artists' creative drive.

My husband and I are friends with a contemporary pastel artist, Riva Sweetrocket, out of Denver. She writes such wonderful short descriptions about what a given painting means. It's food for thought/contemplation. I like that.

And when Tracey gets her imagery for a work, sometimes that seems to change as she paints it. I love when she describes the process and how it evolves for her. And sometimes her titles for a work just says it all.

That's what I enjoy. All of those things that other artists are going through as they create their work is inspirational to me. Hope that helps.

Thank you Katheen and Cathyann, You both have been VERY hepful in this matter. My thoughts, while painting, are usually spinning through my mind to the point where it's a cluster of short stories. I'll be offering up even more insight in the near future. Thanks for following the blog and have a good one. - Steven

People ask me personal questions all the time via my blog or website. I want to live a relatively open and transparent life. I think this way of living inspires others and reminds them that we are all in the same boat, that we have the same struggles whether with our creativity, productivity or our humanity.

First - your art is beautiful, Steven, and I'm so happy to have found you through r.garriott's site. Second-what a thought-provoking dialog going on here. I love reading about everyone else's success and struggles, and seeing glimpses into their lives, but when it comes time to write, I wonder what to say.
