Best of Show - "Home & Away" - 24 x 24" - oil

Don't worry I'm not losing my mind. I know that I posted this piece earlier this month but after receiving the news that this piece won best of show at the WAAL at the MAC (McConnell Arts Center) show in Worthington, OH I thought I'd post it again. For those of you who are unfamiliar, WAAL (Worthington Area Art League) is one of the largest art leagues in the state of Ohio.

The show had many artist and art lovers in attendance and all in all it was a big hit. In addition to receiving a few awards, I had the pleasure of handing out several awards to many well deserving artist. The exhibition will be up until March 18th, 2012. Thank you to Bill Westerman (co-chair), the staff at the McConnell Arts Center, the artists of Worthington and all of those in attendance.

The painting above is just one of several that I'll be including in my upcoming show at the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts (FCCA) in Fredericksburg, VA. I'll be posting more of the pieces as the show draws closer. In addition to the show at the FCCA, I'll be conducting a two day workshop and a brief demo on Saturday, March 3rd.

In addition to painting, teaching and sleeping I found a couple of minutes to act as co-chairperson for the Worthington Area Art League's juried members show at the McConnell Arts Center. The show is open to the public and will be up from January 12-March 18 with the artists reception on Sunday, January 15th from 2-4pm.

Instead of listing out ALL of my expectations for the year, I'd rather handle my new years resolutions like birthday wishes. Blow out the candles, stuff my face full of cake and keep my wishes to myself or else they won't come true. I can only make one public resolution with confidence. I'm going to paint.

Based on the title of this painting I should have posted this a month ago but like every year around this time I find myself completely swamped with work. I can't complain and won't complain because it's a great problem for an artist to have. Luckily, this year I'm prepared for the workload with panels and canvas ready. I took some time to make room for new paintings by sanding down some of the older works. The painting above is the product of an older painting that I recently sanded down. It's nice to give new life to an old panel.

After the hoopla of a major show it's tough to figure out where to go from there. I can only talk from personal experience but there's usually a lot of pacing around, looking through photos, cleaning, and head scratching. Fortunately, that only lasted for a few days before I realized that I needed get back to the easel. I made a commitment last year to put up some pieces at the Worthington Recreational Center for the month of December. Days after the show opening at the Glave Kocen Gallery it dawned on me that I didn't have enough pieces at home to fill the space at the Rec. Center. So during one of my studio clean up sessions I found a few older paintings that had been long forgotten and gave them a makeover.

It was a Saturday I believe. The sun was out, runners were running, the band was playing and I was in full demonstration mode. The painting above was the first of two paintings that I worked on that day. The crowd in attendance was both welcoming and inquisitive which made the time fly by for me. This is crunch time. The painting above is from my show at the B. Deemer Gallery which will be up until October 20th. Since delivering those pieces to Louisville I've put my focus towards my next show at the Glave Kocen Gallery in Richmond, VA. As of today I have 24 pieces done with the intention of having a total of 30 paintings. Below is one of the pieces that will be making its way to Virginia for the November show titled "Days to Remember"

About a week ago I participated in the McConnell Arts Center (MAC) "yART" show and sale. The "yART" event is an art fair held on the lawn of the MAC in Worthington, Ohio and included several artists and area art leagues. Like many artists, if I had the choice I'd never leave my studio but since I teach the oil painting class at the center it seemed like a good opportunity to draw up interest for my class. It only made sense to make the best of my time and work on the painting above for an upcoming competition. In addition to getting some work done I was able to see some familiar faces as well as meet some new folks from the area. It wasn't far into the day when I found myself being interviewed for the community newspaper. Maybe it wasn't a bad idea to leave the studio after all.

So after a long hiatus from the United States, family and blogging, I'm back from my honeymoon/ painting extravaganza in Ireland. If not for our dog and a few obligations, I'm not quite sure if we would have returned at all... but here we are. I'll be posting the pieces that developed from the trip shortly.

I was only home for a week before I had to leave to attend the week long Peter Fiore workshop in Millford, PA. I had somewhat of a clue as to what we'd be working on but I didn't think that I'd get this level of information as well as hospitality from both Barbara and Peter Fiore . I had been following his work since I cut out a page from a 2006 issue of The Artist's Magazine that featured one of his paintings and after meeting him he immediately met and exceeded my expectations. You can clearly see that, based on his work, he is a very well accomplished artist but I had no idea that he was such an incredible teacher. I've come away from the workshop with friends, stories and the necessary tools to take my work to the next level.

Paint studies of scenes in Ireland

While I haven’t posted anything in a little while I can assure you all that I have not fallen off the face of the earth. If anything it’s quite the opposite. I’m currently enjoying the beautiful scenery and hospitality of Ireland.

Based on the photos above you can see that I’ve been doing a little work. I had planned on doing more painting but between all of the sites and traveling I’ve only been able to paint one a day. I’d like to use some of these studies in one of my upcoming shows but that’s still up in the air.

Whenever I’m not attending an art fair, painting or kissing the Blarney Stone, I’ve made it a point to at least do some sketching. The sketchbook in the photo is one that I bought at the Metropolitan Museum of Art way back in 2004. No, it doesn’t have magical powers or anything but it was from one of my first trips to New York and holds a bit of sentiment. I didn’t want to draw just anything in this book but something that would be more dear and memorable to me.

This past Friday I was at the Ohio Statehouse with the Central Ohio Plein Air group. The Statehouse invited us out to paint in celebration of their 150th anniversary. It was both an honor and a challenge. For the first hour or so of the paint out it rained cats and dogs and even included a little lightning. Nonetheless, I was out there trying to make lemonade out of a brutal day. I was soaked, my palette was soaked and even my attitude was a little soggy. Fortunately the sun broke through and gave me the opportunity to work on the painting above. This piece will be hanging up in the statehouse for the month of July.

In my second outing of the weekend with the Central Ohio Plein Air group we were at the Park of Roses. With a grant from the park, we turned the day into a mini competition among those that were painting that day. I was informed yesterday that this particular piece won third place.

"A Rose by Any Other Name" - 8 x 10" - oil

For the first time in a few months I had a chance to go out and paint plein air (the act of painting outside or on location). My first outing was on Friday at the Ohio Statehouse (more about that later) and Saturday I was at the Park of Roses with the Central Ohio Plein Air group.

It was this time last year when I first dove into the plein air arena. From what I remember during that first experience, it was hectic. There were hundreds of people walking by and looking over your shoulder to see what you were coming up with. There was a chance of rain, the sky was overcast and it seemed like the scene I was painting changed every minute.

This year was a little different. The weather was far better and I was far more prepared physically and mentally to take on anything. After a year of plein air painting, I can look back and see that this practice has helped my process in the studio as well. All in all it was a good day at the park. I got to see some of the regular group of plein air painters in the area, meet some new folks and work on a couple of paintings like the one above.

Time Keeps on Slipping

Things around the studio have been crazier than a field goal kicking unicorn. Deadlines, deadlines and more deadlines. In addition to the deadlines, there are so many activities that I'd like to be a part of locally but there's just no time and in some cases it's not worth me losing sleep over. When I can, I like to make the most out of the opportunities that I can take part in. For instance, I'll be painting plein air at the Ohio Statehouse (June 1oth) and the following day I'll be painting at the Park of Roses (June 11th). Will I meet hundreds of art collectors? Probably not but for me these events are going to serve a dual purpose. I'll get to meet some new folks who may turn into fans of my work and get some plein air practice in before our trip to Ireland.

The painting above stems from my drive back home after delivering some new works to the galleries. The plan is to get started on a larger version of this piece before the fall. I'm not sure where it will go but I'd like to be able to include it in one of the upcoming solo shows.

A Brighter Path

A few days ago I hit a brick wall (figuratively speaking). I started second guessing every painting that I wanted to start. I hadn't even put a mark on the board before convincing myself how badly it would turn out. It's easy to talk someone else through a mental block but it's totally different when you're left alone with your own discouraging thoughts.

I was well into a few hours of berating myself before I was able to tell myself "what do you have to lose?" Sure, I could lose a few hours of work time and maybe some paint but that's small potatoes I wasn't in danger of losing my self respect or dignity since I lost those years ago. Even if it's a bad painting I'm likely to walk away having learned something. All in all the pros outweighed the cons and the painting above is what came of it.

For the past week or so I've been working on some things in preparation for the solo shows that I have later in the year. The first is at the B. Deemer Gallery in September and then there's the Glave Kocen Gallery in November. Fortunately, I've been able to make some good progress on some of the pieces that I will have for those shows. I don't know if other artists do this but I decided to put together a folder with all of my reference photos and thumbnails in order to help keep track of things and to help with my process.

On another note, yesterday I received some exciting news! I was notified that the book "Rosa's Bus" by Jo S. Kittinger, that I illustrated last year, received the 2011 Crystal Kite Award. I am both honored and thankful for the support of the folks at Boyds Mills Press. The Crystal Kite Awards are given by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators to recognize great books from the 70 SCBWI regions around the world. The SCBWI Crystal Kite Awards are chosen by other children’s book writers and illustrators, making them the only peer-given awards in publishing for young readers.

"Cora & Speth in Action" - sketch

Now that I've been back home for a few days I thought that I should post the last installment of "Belize it." Below you'll find a group photo of the entire 459th AMDS including my wingman Chris Hopkins (far left) and myself (far right). If you're wondering why I look so dazed... well frankly I was exhausted and had already started thinking about a couple of projects that I needed to work on before I got home.

The sketch above was one of the few compositions that I was able to put together during my time in Belize. Most of my drawings were just thumbnails to help me figure out what photos I would need. This sketch includes Major Mario Cora and Capt. Sarah Speth during health inspection of the hotel's kitchen to ensure that everything is up to code and that we don't get sick. Later on in the year I'll post some of the progress that I've made on this and a few other compositions.

I didn't think that it would be fair to post this blog without a piece of artwork so I'm including yet another painting that will be included in the Art at the Mill show in Millwood, VA from April 23rd to May 8th.

Now let me share some of the photos from my current adventure with the U.S. Air Force Art Program in Belize. We're at the final stretch for this trip with thousands who have benefitted thus far. It's interesting during the day when talking to the medical personnel in the unit in between patients, many of them either tell me how much they appreciate what I'm doing or that they wish that they had some sort of artistic talent. While I enjoy my life as an artist and I try to do a good turn daily, it's nothing compared to the many lives that they are changing in just this short time.

I'll have some sketches to show later on but for now enjoy the photos below.

The painting above is one of six paintings that will be making its way to the Art at the Mill event in Millwood, VA. Although the show doesn't start for a few weeks (April 23rd), I thought I should get these pieces in the mail before I go on my next big "field trip" with the United States Air Force Art Program.

Have you started scratching your head yet and asking yourself "gee, where is Steven off to this time?" Well folks this time I'm in sunny, sunny Belize documenting the humanitarian mission of the USAF. I'll be here for about two weeks with a team of medical personnel that will be going from town to town to cater to many of the medical needs of the Belizean citizens.

Although it is beautiful here this trip is not all about fun and games. Believe it or not Belize is actually a third world country. It really shows once you drive inland and away from the tourist sites. Despite their situation the people of Belize seem to have a remarkably positive outlook on life. This is the kind of mission that can really make you thankful for what you have.

Talk of the Town

Among a barrage of projects, commissions and exhibitions includes the spring Art at the Mill show in Millwood, VA. I've spent what little free time I've had trying to prepare new pieces specifically for this show. The painting above is just one of six paintings that will be making the journey to Virginia. I was somewhat torn between sending this to the Art at the Mill show or hanging on to it for one of my two major gallery shows later this year. The Art at the Mill show will run from April 23rd to May 8th.

In other news, I found myself on a two day lecture tour. Yes, I know... two appearances doesn't really constitute as a "tour." Tuesday I talked to the Women's Art Guild of Central Ohio. They were gracious and attentive and that's not even including the wonderful spread that they provided for lunch. Wednesday night I found myself talking to the members of the Worthington Area Art League (WAAL). I gave them a little bit of insight on my life and experience as a full time artist. From the feedback that I received, a lot of people were entertained with my presentation and could also relate to many of my experiences (both ups and downs).

Below I've attached a picture of the triptych that I've been working on. Earlier I posted in progress pictures but now that the c-clamps have been removed I thought should show the end result.

Tripping Out part 2

Here's some progress on the 48 x 72" triptych that I started late last week. Since I've had to dedicate some time to a 30 x 40" painting for an upcoming show, I haven't been able to work on this one every day. Overall it has gone surprisingly smoother than I had anticipated even though I had to make a few changes from the original study to add a tad bit more depth. I think I have a couple more hours to put into this piece before I'm ready to call it. I'll post a photo later on to show what it looks like once the canvases are separated and hanging on the wall.

Tripping Out

When I'm in the painting zone I rarely think about posting images of pieces in progress. Part of this is because a majority of my paintings as of late are not that large. The other part is that the painting process just flies by when I'm on a roll. The painting that is currently on the easel / easels is a little different.

With some pressure / encouragement from Evelyn to paint larger, I decided to try painting a 48" x 72" triptych. Triptych: a set of three panels side by side, bearing pictures. Because of this intimidating size I thought that some preparation would be helpful. The painting above is the study for the larger pieces.

I haven't painted anything this large since I worked on a set of children's themed murals in Virginia. In theory this venture seemed fun but there were a couple of logistical issues , such as size and the crappy state of my studio, that posed complications. So I turned our living room into a temporary studio.

Thumbs Up for Thumbnails!

In step with my promise to keep the mediocre paintings down to a minimum, I've been redeveloping my process. Part of this redevelopment means getting back to some old habits like creating thumbnails to work on composition. During my undergrad years, drawing thumbnails was an automatic. For four years my professors pounded the importance of starting the creative process with thumbnails into my head. Even to this day when an illustration project comes up I start developing thumbnails but somewhere along the way I got away from this process when it came to fine art.

So a few days ago I found myself about to start the painting above. I had my reference in hand but I was still a little nervous about starting. Then I heard a voice say "if you plan it the art will come." So I grabbed my sketch book and started drawing thumbnails based on my reference photos. Within a few minutes I had a few different compositional options like the ones below.

Last week I drove to Virginia to drop off the painting above along with some smaller pieces to the Glave Kocen Gallery. This particular painting was based on a previous painting, titled "Silver Line" (see below), from my 2009 solo show. Obviously they're not identical but they imply the same sense of space. More and more often I find myself taking a second stab at older paintings. I suppose it's my way of convincing myself that I am growing and changing as an artist. With all of this said, I don't consider one of these paintings to be better than the other... just unique to the time when they were developed.

All of this reminds me of my mother when she would tell my brother that he was her favorite then later on tell me the same thing but never while we were both in the room at the same time. This was cute because I knew she only meant it when she was talking to me.

Study Habits

Evaluating your art work on a consistent basis is extremely important for artists. It's one of the few things that I pride myself on but recently my focus has been on the painting process. After thoroughly looking over some of my old pieces, I've noticed that my major shortcomings start with my lack of preparation. My best pieces have stemmed from good studies.

Looking back, I can recall several instances where I'd jumped right into a 30x40" painting with no real game plan. I may have had a few reference photos and a vague idea of what I wanted out of the painting but that's just not enough for me to create something worthwhile. Often the pressures of deadlines play into this "hurry up and go" mentality but I've decided that I can't let that affect the end result. I've got to work on my habits when preparing for a painting and if this means that I have to slow down a little... then so be it.

For the most part I'm a pessimist. It's unfortunate but it helps me deal with this roller coaster ride that I call "the art life." All in all I'm just trying to break even but every once in a while something good happens. Today for instance, I attended the Worthington Area Art League / Ohio Plein Air holiday potluck dinner. It was here that I was presented with a first place ribbon for the painting above. This painting is currently part of an exhibition titled "Leaving Footprints" at the Arts Castle in Delaware, OH. We were fortunate enough to have Don Jones, "the father of art therapy" juror the show. You can read more about Mr. Jones in this interview (click here).

This award was an important step for me because I'm still very new to the local art scene here in Ohio. While I can enjoy this award today, tomorrow my focus will shift back to trying to make the next painting better than the last.

Travel Friday

While most folks were battling it out at the malls on Black Friday, Evelyn and I spent the day driving to Nashville, TN. In addition to visiting family, we needed to drop off some new pieces at The Arts Company in downtown Nashville. The painting above was a demo for my painting class at the McConnell Arts Center but now it's part of the inventory at The Arts Company.

The drop off went fairly smooth which allowed us more time to catch up with our nieces (age 6 and 9). When we weren't getting our butts handed to us in Twister, Operation or any number of Wii games, we worked on the shields (shown below) that will soon hang on their backyard play fort. It was great to see just how much they appreciated the work. For us it was just another day as artists.

This past summer I decided that I'm going to become more involved in the local art scene here in Ohio. My first move was joining the Ohio Plein Air group which has really paid off. Most recently I joined the Worthington Area Art League (WAAL). One of the key reasons for this local involvement is to meet other artists in the area. Personally, I could get use to being a hermit but it is helpful to talk shop with a few of your peers. The painting above will be on display at Dick Blick Art Store (Columbus, OH) with the works of some of my new found artist friends.

Better Late than Never

I have several works that I will be sending to the galleries shortly but I decided to post this one instead. This is a painting of a boat that we saw during our time in Ireland. The little island that we stayed on was one of our favorite memories from our Ireland trip. This should've been completed much sooner (3 years ago) but I've had to put this piece on the back burner numerous times because of work and life in general. There aren't many paintings that I put a "not for sale" sign on but this is one of them... simply for the sentiment.

Again I decided to revisit some of the photographs that Evelyn and I took during our trip to Europe a couple of years ago. The piece above comes from our short stay in Larne, Ireland. Initially I had no interest in painting this scene because scenes with multiple levels of depth were just too intimidating at the time. Now, about a hundred paintings later, I embrace depth. I relish depth. So depth, if you're listening...Bring it on!

The Bus Stops Here

Earlier this year I started working on "Rosa's Bus" for Boyds Mills Press, the trade division of Highlights for Children, Inc. It's not so much about Rosa Parks but the bus that hosted one of the most historic events in the civil rights movement. This story, written by Jo S. Kittinger, takes you from the assembly line of bus #2857 to it's arrival at the Henry Ford Museum. As of this month, Rosa's Bus is available at most retail bookstores.

Back in 2007 Evelyn and I went on a little vacation to Europe, making stops in Ireland, Scotland and Italy. After getting back to the states I was gushing with inspiration and created a body of work that stemmed from the trip.

A few days ago I found myself sifting through some of those Europe inspired paintings. After taking a look at those old pieces I quickly made it a point to paint some of these works again. That trip deserved better and I was determined to make things right. So here is one of the "do overs." The scene above can be viewed across from the Colosseum in Rome, Italy.

Crazy in Love

Once again I found myself out painting before the sun was up in the Whetstone Prairie at the Park of Roses. If this isn't a love for painting then it must be insanity. The previous week of painting was a complete dud by my standards as I could not get into the right frame of mind for plein air painting. This week was somewhat different. I was relaxed, calm and even mellow, characteristics that have never been used to describe me as a person. The painting above is what stemmed from that unseasonably cold morning.

A Force to be Reckoned With

So some of you may know that every now and then I get to go on some awesome trips for the United States Air Force. For those of you that don't know...well I just told you. The deal is that for every trip that I go on, I donate one painting that sums up or documents the trip. Well in the past year I've been sent on three different trips. The time has come to turn these paintings over to the Air Force. For about three months these pieces will be on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB.

My trip to Manas Air Field in Kyrgyzstan was as close as I could get to Afghanistan. I took advantage of seeing our brave young men and women make their last pitstop before heading to Afghanistan and in some cases, heading home from their first, second or third tour.

The trip to Los Angeles was for the artists to get a better understanding of the Air Force's part in space exploration and technology. Most of the stuff that they were talking about we couldn't actually see or take photos of but somehow I was able to put together a decent piece.

My last and most recent journey took me to Elmendorf's AFB near Anchorage, Alaska. The 477th Fighter Group was the initially a bombardment group to help train the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. This group was reactivated in 2007 and they became the first Air Force Reserve unit to fly, maintain and support the F22A Raptor. Basically, it's a big deal. The painting above came from a great day of plein air painting at Liberty Presbyterian Church in Delaware, Ohio with the Ohio Plein Air group. When I go out with the group I really never know just what I'm going to paint. Some days I'm looking for a challenge and other days I'm just looking for a small victory. When I drove up to the church I had every intention of painting the church, which is actually an authentic barn, but I was soon informed that there was a trail. Shortly afterwards found a lovely little pond in an opening. The view was quite intimidating at first but once I settled in it was off to the races.

I just want to remind everyone of my upcoming online show at the Glave Kocen Gallery entitled "I've Been There." There will be several new pieces based on my travels this summer. I think there's a little something for everyone. The show is exclusively online and will run from September 3rd to the 28th. Log on and enjoy the view.

Preparing for a Grand Upload

Right now I'm in the midst of a paint-a-thon. I've just completed about ten paintings for my online show at the Glave Kocen Gallery in September. That's right I said an online show. I'll have paintings from my plein air exploits as well as some studio pieces. I'll start posting some of the pieces that are in the show in a week or so. I haven't decided if the painting above will be in the show or not but it would be nice to find a home for it.

In other news...this summer I've been painting with the Ohio Plein Air group. Each week out has been an awesome experience that has helped my painting leaps and bounds. My observation for color, my composition and decision making have all improved... at least I think they've improved.

Last month I posted a blog about obtaining new representation in Louisville, KY. Well now I have more news but this time it's in Columbus, Ohio's Short North Gallery District. About a month ago I was in search of gallery representation here in Columbus. Well things were going slow to say the least until a friend and fellow artist came to my rescue (Thanks Jim) and recommend me to the Sharon Weiss Gallery. After meeting Sharon and talking for a bit, we decided to give it a go. There it is...the start of a new relationship in Columbus. I think that this move will further help to get my name out there on a local level because I still only know a handful of people here.

Two weeks ago we went to the beach for vacation. I haven't been to the beach in probably twenty years and I haven't had a real vacation in three years. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if this was a real vacation. Is it a vacation when you take work with you? Well, I took my french easel with me just in case I was inspired. Well it didn't take long before inspiration struck. Because it was technically vacation, I kept my painting time down to a couple of hours a day. The painting above was just one of the pieces that I was able to complete during the week.

A few months ago I approached a gallery in Louisville, KY. Why Louisville? Well, why not? I'm always driving through Kentucky on my way to Tennessee. It just seemed logical. So anyway, they took a look at my work and apparently they were impressed as Brenda, the owner, asked me to come down to show some works in person. Long story short, I'm now represented in Louisville, KY by the B. Deemer Gallery. The painting above is just one of the six paintings that I delivered to the gallery last week.

Plein and Simple

A few weeks ago I was invited to paint with the Ohio Plein Air group. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term "plein air" it is a French term that means painting in outdoor daylight or on location. The Ohio Plein Air group meets every week at a different location in the Columbus area.

Initially I was a little nervous about joining the group because you never know how you or your work will be received. Also, if you don't know by now I like to paint in the studio with the comfort of a controlled setting where I can leave a painting for a few days and get back to it when the time is right. This invitation was just the challenge/experience that I needed. The first couple of trips out I felt like I was on some sick game show for artists. I was fumbling around looking for the right brush, I couldn't paint fast enough and I was overly concerned with details...total nightmare.

Last week things started to come together while painting at Mirror Lake on The Ohio State University Campus. This was probably the first of the plein air paintings that I was somewhat pleased with. There are things that I would change if I had to do it again but I wouldn't change the overall experience.

It's been pretty busy lately in the studio but instead of overwhelming you all with one big explosive update I'll give it to you in small doses. The painting above was just accepted into the Maryland Federation of Art's group show titled "American Landscapes." "The Village #2" stems from a unexpected walk through German Village (neighborhood just south of downtown Columbus, OH). Getting the acceptance letter was great news because it's been a while since I've entered any competitions and I knew how competitive the art scene is in the Maryland/DC area. The show will be at the Maryland Federation of Art - 18 State Circle, Annapolis, MD 21401 - from August 20 to September 19. Well, I better get back to the easel... I've got a whole slew of deadlines to meet.

For the past week I've accomplished absolutely nothing as far as painting. I've been focused on clearing up some studio space. Initially it started out as some minor spring cleaning and then it turned into a full expansion. For those of you that don't know my painting process, I like to make my own painting panels with the exception of some of the larger works on canvas. This process often brings along a lot of dust with the use of a miter, circular and table saw. While the occasional dog hair can't be avoided, dust is just plain annoying. So for the past week or so Evelyn and I have been working hard towards building a shed for the building process. Now I'll actually be able to use the studio for painting. Here are some photos from the construction site known as my backyard.

Late last week I had conversation with my friend and former classmate, Robert Caldwell. Now let me give you a little bit of history about Robert and I. During those years in undergrad, Robert was at a level that I could only dream about. I wouldn't call it a rivalry because everyone was pushing each other to up their game. Since those torturous days in art school we've both made strides in our own work. Robert is now a rock star in the wildlife art scene while I...well...let's just say that I'm doing alright for myself.

With the level of respect that I have for Robert and his work it was great to hear that he wanted to work with me on a potential two man show. Nothing has been set in stone but the ball is in motion. I'll keep everyone up to date on any new developments. Fortunately, I have some time to get my act together.

In the mean time...the painting above was among a batch of paintings that I delivered to Glave Kocen Gallery earlier this month.

After my last post I mentioned that I needed a new source of inspiration. While this remains true, I also realized that I expected more from myself as far as the quality and consistency of my work. This dawned on me after taking a hard look at my own work and the works of artists that I admire. After this discovery, I decided to cleanse my studio of all negative energy. For me this required destroying any work that may have caused me any aggravation. It wasn't a pretty process but it was necessary. The painting above was still in progress when it became a casualty of art.

I don't know if anyone has noticed but during the past couple of months I haven't been my usual productive self. I couldn't quite put my finger on just what was bringing my productivity to a standstill. After several days of torture, I came to the conclusion that I need to find a new source of inspiration in my subject matter. I've been cooped up in my studio for so long that I've lost touch with my subject matter. So the plan is to get out a little more and let the inspiration find me. For the past couple of months I've tried to get back into the swing of things by entering a few competitions and shows but a few unexpected projects dropped into my lap. Fortunately these projects were well worth my time to stop everything. Now that I'm back into the swing of things I decided that I should get some new work to the Glave Kocen Gallery in Richmond, VA. I've managed to complete about seven pieces..ranging from 8x10" to 30x40". The painting above is just one of the paintings that will be heading to Virginia.

The painting above is just one of the paintings that I currently have on display at the Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center of Worthington. Also, for the next six weeks I'll be holding a painting workshop at the arts center. I've included a photo from the artists reception below.

What's next for me? Well I've got several small works and a couple of 30x40" paintings on the easel. It's a regular factory around here. Hopefully I'll have some more works to share with everyone real soon.

Full Frontier - part 3

Before anymore time passes I thought that I should post the conclusion to my trip to Alaska. During the last two days we were unbelievably busy. Our main focus dealt with documenting the F-22 Raptors.

During the next two days Major Reaver helped us get so many dynamic pictures that most people will never have the opportunity to experience. We started Wednesday with a trip to the flight tower (actually on top of the tower). From there we went down on the flight line where we watched a few F-22's land within shouting distance of our group. It was both awesome and loud. Amidst our adventures we came across two rescued eagles. I couldn't pass up a chance to take some photos for my friend and fellow painter, Robert Caldwell. After we were through yelling at the eagles to look sexy for the camera we headed to the hanger for some close up photos of the planes. It was a productive day.

The next and last official day of our trip would be spent observing a C-17 being loaded for a humanitarian exercises in another part of Alaska. Believe it or not I found it quite interesting, although it was one of the colder mornings. After a good lunch we went back to the hangers to visit with a few of the technicians and to see them at work. We went back to the reserve office to say our goodbyes and thank yous.

Lastly, Ben and I went downtown to meet my friend and former classmate Stephanie Johnson. I hadn't seen her in... well let's just say a while. She was the only person that I knew in Anchorage and I didn't want to leave without seeing her. When we were in school, I always admired Stephanie's talent and her delightful personality. The trip would have been a total bust if I had missed out on seeing her.

Day two was actually day one. Easter was exhausting but we were ready for our first real day at Elmendorf Air Force Base. We met Major Lisa Reaver, our chaperon/escort, to get started on the day. As with most trips, we started off with meeting a few of the bigwigs of the base so that we could let them know what we're looking for and if it's possible. Everyone was very excited to have us on the base. They were even more responsive once they found out exactly what we were there to do.

After the meet and greet, Lisa took us on a tour of the base and further explained the importance of this event. The 477th Fighter Group was originally the World War II era 477th Bombardment Group (Medium) manned by African American pilots and the first Reserve unit to field the F-22. Basically, this was history in the making and everyone was excited that we would be highlighting this event.

While taking the tour, Lisa told us about some great photo opportunities. She had one in mind that overlooked the base and Anchorage. With the help of Airmen Matt, the base photographer, we found the wooden tower. This tower obviously didn't get a lot of visitors as the road was covered in snow. This is where things get interesting. We parked the truck and proceeded up the snow covered road to the tower that sat on a steep snow covered hill. What's a little hike? Well after we stepped off of the road onto the hill I stepped into two feet of snow. This must be a fluke. I would step down into two feet of snow continuously for the next twenty yards while Matt, who had a thinner frame than myself, was able to walk on the top layer of the snow.

Although we gave Lisa a hard time about leading us into an "Arctic deathtrap" the view from the rickety tower was totally worth the hike. Here's a view of the tower, with our motley crew and the view from the tower with an F-22 taking off.

Full Frontier - part 1

Earlier this year I was thinking about all of the places that I would love to visit. Well an opportunity came up to mark one of these places off of my list. Ben Bensen (Society of Illustrators of L.A. Air Force Chair) called me up a few weeks ago to ask if I'd be interested in taking a trip with him to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. This trip was developed so that we could document the first Reserve unit to field the f-22 Raptor. Of course I jumped at the opportunity.

Usually there's not a whole lot of notification before you have to pack up and leave. This trip was no different. We were scheduled to arrive in Anchorage on Easter Sunday. Ben and I spent a good portion of Easter in the airport and possibly even longer driving around the base looking for lodging. If you've ever seen or been on a military base, then you know that after a while the buildings start to look the same. With a LOT of help and a full tank of gas we finally found the lodging office and then our rooms. The accommodations were quite nice but it was to be expected since according to the Air Force we were Colonel's.

After quickly unpacking, our next challenge was to find a place to eat that would be open after 8pm on Easter Sunday. By this time we had already been through downtown Anchorage and knew what might be available. After a bite at Applebee's we headed back to the base where we were greeted by a locked gate. Apparently the gate that we had originally gone through was not the main gate and therefore was locked up for the night. So here we are in the rental car driving around in the dark looking for the main gate. By the time we arrived at the main gate I think we had been driving for about an hour. Even though we had already been on base and dropped our bags off we still had to get a visitors past.

I can't speak for Ben but I couldn't believe how quickly I fell asleep after all of that. And that's just day one... to be continued.

Painting out of a Corner

On my last post I mentioned the gallery roundabout, which included a drive to galleries in Virginia, Tennessee and Ohio. During this trip I received a call offering me a small show at McConnell Arts Center in Worthington, OH. So since my return I've been scrambling around like a three legged dog with a four legged itch to get some work done. This is one of the first of a series of paintings that I need to have done by May. I'm shooting for 15 good pieces but I'll settle for 10 awesome pieces.

In the midst of this paint-a-thon I heard the ring ring jingle of my phone. It was Ben Bensen of the Air Force Art Program calling to see if I were interested in going to....drum roll....Alaska! I jumped at the opportunity. Unfortunately the trip would require that I leave on Easter but a chance like this doesn't come often.

Last week I did the gallery roundabout. This includes driving from Ohio to Virginia then from Virginia to Tennessee and back to Ohio. We picked up some pieces and dropped off some new work. The painting above is just one of the six new paintings that we delivered to BJ Kocen and Jennifer Glave of the Glave Kocen Gallery. While I'm thinking of BJ, I better mention this little tid bit....

Late last year I taught an illustration class at Otterbein College. One of the projects was to create a CD cover for my good friend/ talented musician BJ Kocen. The project went over fairly well. Of course only one of the illustrations could be used for the cover. And the winner was.... Lindsey Billingsley! The painting above stemmed from a walk in the park with some friends. What started as a day of leisure turned out to be very productive for me. It took me a while to get up the courage to work on this painting but I bit the bullet. After I finished it the glare reminded me of one of those inspirational posters that you often see in offices.

During last month's show in Nashville, I noticed that a lot of folks took a special interest in a painting titled "The Light in Your Eyes." I enjoyed the end result and wanted to do more similar pieces. With this in mind I wanted to test the waters of the Columbus art scene by including this painting in the group show, "New Works" at Art Access Gallery. The opening went fairly well despite the horrific weather conditions.

Often I post updates on Facebook letting people know the status of my painting escapades. The responses that I get usually go something like..."you're a machine" or "do you ever sleep?" Well I'd like to clear this up a little bit. I'm in no way a machine, although I did have braces and I do own a few transformer action figures. For those of you that see me as a fairly prolific artist, I can only attribute this to desperation and my total obsession with making a living as an artist. I wake up everyday with the mindset that I'm out of work. I don't wait for people to find me or for the galleries to do all of my dirty work. It's the career that I've chosen and I'm extremely dedicated. Some days are more productive than others but everyday is a workday...and work is good.

I can't remember a show opening that I was not nervous about. This is my first show with The Arts Company, so I'm hoping to make somewhat of a name for myself there. So now that most of the pieces for my upcoming Nashville show are done, I can get back to entering competitions. I've really slacked on that aspect of my career during the past few months because of several professional obligations. A good friend/rival reminded me a couple of weeks ago about the Richeson 75 competition. I've had success in the past with this competition and thought I'd try my hand at their small works competition. This is one of the pieces that I entered into the competition. It was a bit of a scramble to get the entries completed for the deadline but I made it right on time. On to the next competition.

The painting above is just one of 33 paintings that will be in my show titled Nashville Town and Country at The Arts Company in Nashville, TN. In similar fashion to most of my paintings, this piece stems from a roadtrip during the holidays. I don't often paint winter scenes but this one struck me as appealing and may lead to a few more. The opening is Saturday, February 6th from 6-9pm so if you know of anyone in the Nashville area tell them to stop on by.

COVERing Otterbein

So late last year I was teaching an illustration class at Otterbein College. When I was an undergraduate student I was completely unprepared to work with real clients as opposed to classroom assignments. With that in mind I thought that it would be good for this class to work with a couple of real clients. Westerville Magazine was gracious enough to publish all of the works that the students completed specifically for the publication. Although all of the students did a great job, only one could be chosen for the cover. That honor went to Joe Maleski. I hope that this experience was encouraging for all of them.

Like I said, this class had a few real clients. This cover for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) was illustrated by Alice Smith. This particular project acted more like a competition amongst the class because the AASCU could not include all of the illustrations. There were many great ideas and concepts but in the end "there can be only one."

Congratulations to the entire class for not only producing great work but surviving my class.

This piece will be a part of my show in Nashville next month. Like every show, I'd like to put together a body of work that appeals to both myself and the viewing public. With this particular show, the owner of the gallery would like to see a lot of Nashville landmarks. Of course the owner is thinking about what has the best chance of selling. I've learned that you just can't predict what will sell. It's almost impossible. Last month a painting of a garage in a Virginia neighborhood sold because the color palette reminded the patron of her trip to Greece. What are the odds. Day in and day out I have to remind myself not to paint something because it will sell, but to do it because it moves me. Every now and then I can find a happy medium where everyone is pleased.

The Year End Preview

Here we are at the end of another year and with that comes the start of a new one. For the most part, we all know that not much actually changes at the stroke of midnight. Basically we have to take care of our taxes and find a new cat calendar. Like every year I try be realistic about the coming year and hope that it's better than the last one.

Earlier today I was asked what people could expect out of Steven in 2010. My response was that I was going to be more productive (painting and marketing) and a kinder person but now that I've thought about it those aren't realistic goals. I'll just stick to being more productive. The latter seems like a bit of a stretch.

Calling all Angels...and Saints

Part of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts exhibition "Under a Virginia Sky"

Last month during the opening of my "Between Homes" show, I met some of the faculty from St. Gertrude High School. Apparently they had the pieces that I created for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts hanging up in their library. I assumed that those pieces were collecting dust in the basement of the museum. Anyway, they asked me to come speak to their students about myself and the work.

It was an easy decision to make the trip because honestly how often do people really want to hear what I have to say. A few of the classes had assignments based on my work which was just amazing. It was fascinating to read some of the insight on my work. Some of the essays were spot on with what I want people to take away from my work and that's always encouraging. Overall, the day was long but well worth the trip. I got to meet some of the most delightful young ladies as well as share my story. My only hope is that I made a difference... because isn't that what everyone wants?

Do things ever slow down? Sometimes but I can't remember the last time that things were slow. It may have been in the 90's... I think it was a Wednesday. Let's be honest, if things were to slow down I don't know what I'd do with myself. I'd probably run a muck and start doing chores around the house (heaven forbid).

While the show at the Glave Kocen Gallery (plug) is still in full effect, I've got to get started on the next project. This time I'm preparing for a show in Nashville, TN. Instead of a 40 piece spectacular, I'll be working on a 15 t0 20 piece bonanza. In addition to this show I'll be working on some pieces for competitions and a few group shows. It'll be interesting how I juggle all of this during the holiday season. Stay tuned and Happy Thanksgiving!
